Thank you, I totally agree with you and really want to put pressure on the government to ban it as well as manufacturers to stop using it.

Right now the best way to reduce the plastic use is to start avoiding single-use plastic.

Our Co-op still do biodegradable bags. I work there and they sell very quickly.

I was using my compost at the weekend and was having to remove all the tea bags as they hadn’t decomposed where the plastic was! Yes I think I mentioned China in the article and people mistakenly assume it’s just litter louts causing the problem when it isn’t!

Now with China not taking as much of our plastic to recycle (that’s where our plastic goes to get recycled) it is very important for all of us to do our bit!

We just have to keep this whole issue in the public eye for change to happen, and it is thankfully, each week there seems to be progress made!

I don’t understand why supermarkets don’t move to paper bags though or recyclable ‘plastic’ bags. Coop used to do these recyclable biodegradable bags but stopped. I think they get too much money selling plastic bags.

There are so many things I did not know about, such as black packaging, Bee’s Wrap, plastic straws and even tea bags! It’s certainly an eye opener. Thank you so much for sharing. I will also be sharing this too.

Thanks Jo, great to have your tips, I’ll look into those eco eggs, I remember using wash balls years ago which I got from a shopping channel but they weren’t that good. Good to know Pukka tea doesn’t use plastic in their bags, it just highlights how it isn’t necessary – let hope manufacturers turn things around sooner rather than later!

Myself and my husband feel really strongly about the plastic pollution and we’ve been trying to reduce the use of single use plastic in our household as much as we can. Funnily enough and what is also clear from your post is that reducing the use of plastic leads to more informed and healthier living. So far we have ditched drinks in plastic bottles which was quite hard especially that we are quite big squash drinkers but we’ve managed to find squash in glass bottle now which is also 100% organic and doesn’t contain any nasties either so win win. We got rid of wipes as convenient as they are, I use eco egg for washing so again no large plastic bottles of detergent to buy, use vinegar when cleaning and reusable, washable natural cotton cloths too etc. There is so much more still to do though! As for the tea I can recommended Pukka Teas as their teabags don’t contain plastic at all and by the end of the year all the envelopes they wrap their tea bags in will be plastic free and 100% recyclable as well. I think it’s brilliant that so many people want to get on board and if every household starts making little lifestyle changes to exclude the use of plastic that would be fantastic! Thanks for such a great post!

It’s absolutely shocking just where we use plastics these days – I mean who would have thought that some is used in teabags of all things! It is encouraging that there are so many alternatives out there though.

Thanks Debi. Our tea bags are paper but to seal the edges manufacturers use plastic which I only found out recently as it’s not advertised on the label. I imagine your tea bags are the same.

Thank you Colleen. I went shopping for shampoo, conditioner and shower soap bars today and made a point in John Lewis and L’Occitane that they needed to get up to speed with the single use plastic problem. I ended up in Lush and can’t wait to try out these new products.

We use our own grocery sacks, and have for years. The cashiers always knew my bags. lol I don’t use plastic bottles for water any more. We have refillable cups that we use. We recycle everything. But, you have so much info here, I’ll need to read through again. I’ll also have to check my tea bags, as I think they are paper (and say so prominently on the label). Also, I though those into my composter, so now I need to check it.

You should see the rubbish that floats up here to Shetland – every beach walk we do we try and clear up some, and every year we have an island-wide beach clean but it barely makes a dent in the problem. We need to take action at the source.

At first my husband thought it was weird (and so was I) when I put the apples, carrots etc in the trolley without the bags. There is a Norwegian company in the UK now called Norwex who have loads of products to help eliminate plastic use.

Thank you Katherine, the ideas just kept pouring out of me so I had to rein myself in to not go on further as it’s such a huge subject. You’re right we really have gone backwards as we have less time despite our labour saving gadgets and our convenience has cost the planet dearly! It’s time to go back to basics.

I had no idea that black plastic trays were worse than others. We really need to tackle this immediately.
I’ve gone back to shampoo bars and solid soap as it seems so wasteful to buy these in plastic. The upside is that switching to pure soap means my hands aren’t dry at all anymore. My mum has also knitted me reusable washable dishcloths as I had been lazy and buying sponges lately. A bento box for the kids lunch has meant no wrapping anything.
I’ve also bought some mesh bags to avoid using plastic veg/fruit bags in the greengrocer/supermarket (if they have any loose!).

It’s funny how we’ve come so far, but we’ve really gone backwards. I also remember a huge supermarket with bulk bins, loose produce, water fountains. Wipes didn’t exist when I was young and coffee came in mugs. Convenience and a fear of germs (antibacterial products that do more harm than good, wrapping veg in plastic so, heaven forbid, another human touches our red pepper before we get home and wash it anyway) have greatly added to the world’s plastic mountain.

Well this is an epic comment! But you’ve given me a lot of food for thought. x
