I’ve been eating this dish since I was a child. My mother would always serve mussels in this way and hers were probably from a tin. Cod roe was another thing she used to slice and serve fried on toast. Hence I don’t know if I’m alone in having this as my mum is Danish or maybe everyone eats this, please let me know!
All I know is that I love Moules Marinière and this is like an unshelly cheats version on toast. Food doesn’t have to be complicated to taste good and this dish is a prime example of this
My inspiration for blogging this dish is Jacqueline at Tinned Tomatoes and her No Croutons Required challenge which is sandwiches this month then on checking the small print I read it had to be vegetarian! So here it is anyway, you can’t keep a good dish down!

Ok, I confess, I’m scared of mussels. Never eaten them because they look scary and I just can’t imagine (or maybe can shudder) what they feel like. I really wish I could make myself try them to find out.
Camilla
Oh there’s nothing to be scared of even my picky 10 yr old has been eating them for years, no weird texture to them!

You know I don’t even know where to buy them from or how! I must pluck up courage to hunt some down – guess I’ll start at the supermarket fish counter ?
Camilla
If it’s just for yourself you can buy them in tins or you can get them in Tesco in pre-packed packs on the fresh fish aisle which is enough for 2:-) They did stop doing them for a few months which really upset me – it’s my occassional treat:-)

I love all of the ingrediants but would never have thought to use them together, I will definitely try this as it sounds amazing!
Camilla
I’m just upset that Tesco have stopped selling their fresh mussels in packs so will have to find another supply. You can also use tinned mussels!
Maya Russell
Simple and tasty I’m sure.

I totally love this recipe Camilla, it reminds me of a dish my mum use to make with fried cod’s roe, from a tin, and served on toast! A real blast from the past! Karen
Camilla
And I used to like that cod’s roe but have never made it myself, must get a tin!

Oh this looks so good. I do adore mussels but only me and one of the kids eats them. Think I might make this for lunch next weekend and the others can have beans on toast! 😉
Camilla
Thank you, you’ve made me feel better as I wasn’t sure about posting this simple dish!
