A tasty German Hot Dog with a tangy krautslaw (a fusion of sauerkraut and coleslaw) for a healthy twist! Perfect half-time snack for when Germany playing football!
In case you hadn’t notice we’re in the grip of World Cup fever and to mark the occasion Warburton’s are challenging everyone over on their Facebook page to enter their competition “Cook Off Before Kickoff”.
They want fans to come up with match day snacks to enjoy during key games to win prizes!
I was asked to devise a recipe to enjoy during the Germany v USA match which is due to kick off on 26 June. Warburtons sent me a German themed mystery box of ingredients and lots of their bread products with which to make my creation!
Making German Hot Dogs
I immediately honed in on the sauerkraut as I have heard about it for so many years and yet I have never tasted it. So I set about researching uses and how to eat it. You can eat it hot or cold, in its juice, drained or rinsed depending on your preference.
I had no idea that sauerkraut was used as a hot dog topping and therefore decided to make a zesty slaw for mine by adding some carrot, apple and mayonnaise (it’s a sneaky way of getting your men to eat some of their 5 a day at least).
Toppings for German Hot Dogs
A slice of pickled gherkin and a squeeze of German mustard were the finishing touches.
Who am I kidding? I also had to add ketchup and crispy onions!
Just like any football match there’s usually a substitution so I substituted Hot Dog Rolls for Warburtons Sub Rolls which were just the perfect size for the large German frankfurters I was sent.
These hot dogs went down really well with me and the boys (I include my hubby in that category) but they weren’t to my 10 year old daughter’s liking as pickles are a taste she has not yet acquired!
The subs were light and airy and made a great home for the frankfurters so I would use these again!
I think this is a great quick snack which you can easily knock up before kick off or during the match and would be fab washed down with some German beer. Now it’s your turn to think of a snack using Warburtons bread!
