Learn How to BBQ Asparagus. Coated in seasoned olive oil and garlic, asparagus is threaded onto skewers for a tasty and nutritious side dish!
How to BBQ Asparagus! Suddenly we’re in a heatwave so people up and down the country will be dusting down their barbecues and cooking up a storm.
If men had their way I’m sure they’d be happy just to eat meat on these occasions but for me, it’s equally about the veggies and salads.
As we’re in the middle of asparagus season I thought I would share with you how to BBQ asparagus after doing some research.
Asparagus can be tricky to BBQ (or grill as they say in the US).
They can fall into the coals or be fiddly to turn so the trick is to thread them onto soaked wooden skewers.
This way you just turn the whole lot once and then when you’re ready to serve simply slide off the skewers.
Threading the asparagus is a little fiddly but I promise your effort will be rewarded.
The best way to cook the asparagus is on a high heat but the day my son cooked ours he’d used up most of the heat on our meat dishes so ours had a long, slow cook.
At this point, I have to heap praise on my son for his excellent BBQ skills.
There’s nothing worse than a charred black sausage or equally bad is raw meat.
My son has his BBQ skills down to a fine art and cooks the food perfectly, probing everything with a thermometer for safety!
Funnily enough, he’s just walked in after attending a BBQ where the food was cooked on a gas BBQ. He says it doesn’t taste the same as a charcoal BBQ so he doesn’t see the point!
Anyway, I hope you try out my tips on barbecuing asparagus.

How to BBQ Asparagus
Ingredients
- 500 g asparagus
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 garlic clove crushed
- freshly ground salt & pepper
- 2 wooden skewers soaked in water
Instructions
- Wash and trim the woody ends of the asparagus spears with a sharp knife.
- Pour the olive oil into a small bowl and whisk together with the garlic and a generous grinding of salt and pepper.
- Place the asparagus in a food bag, add the garlic oil and holding the bag shut with your hand give it a good shake.
- Thread the asparagus near the base onto a wooden skewer and then repeat with another skewer near the top.
- Place the asparagus on the BBQ to cook, turning once. Will take about 4 minutes per side on a high heat and up to 10 minutes a side on a low heat (which mine were cooked on).
- Check if asparagus is cooked by inserting a skewer.
- Serve hot or cold as a side dish.

Love asparagus – especially on the bbq, have never thought to use skewers to hold them together, even though I make veggie skewers regularly. Adding asparagus to the shopping list!

Fantastic idea, Camilla! I do bbq asparagus but always fiddle with them as individual slippery spears. Not any more! Thanks for sharing this tip xx
