How to BBQ Asparagus! Suddenly we’re in a heatwave so people up and down the country will be dusting down their barbecues and cooking up a storm. If men had their way I’m sure they’d be happy to just eat meat on these occasions but for me it’s equally about the veggies and salads.
As we’re in the middle of asparagus season I thought I would share with you how to BBQ asparagus after doing some research.
Asparagus can be tricky to BBQ (or grill as they say in the US).
It can fall down into the coals or just be really fiddly to turn so the trick is to thread it onto soaked wooden skewers.
This way you just turn the whole lot once and when you’re ready to serve simply slide off the skewers.
Threading the asparagus is a little fiddly but I promise you your effort will be rewarded. The best way to cook the asparagus is on a high heat but the day my son cooked ours he’d used up most of the heat on our meat dishes so ours had a long, slow cook. At this point I have to heap praise on my son for his excellent BBQ skills.
To me there’s nothing worse than a charred black sausage or equally bad raw meat but my son has his BBQ skills down to a fine art and cooks the food perfectly and probes everything with a thermometer for safety!
Funnily enough he’s just walked in after attending a BBQ where the food was cooked on a gas BBQ and he says it doesn’t taste the same as a coal BBQ so he doesn’t see the point!
Anyway I do hope you try out my tips on how to BBQ asparagus as it’s so good and do let me know what vegetables you like to BBQ!

How to BBQ Asparagus
Ingredients
- 500 g asparagus
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 garlic clove crushed
- freshly ground salt & pepper
- 2 wooden skewers soaked in water
Instructions
- Wash and trim off the woody ends of the asparagus
- Pour the olive oil into a small bowl and whisk together with the garlic and a generous grinding of salt and pepper.
- Place the asparagus in a food bag, add the garlic oil and holding the bag shut with your hand give it a good shake.
- Thread the asparagus near the base onto a wooden skewer and then repeat with another skewer near the top.
- Place the asparagus on the BBQ to cook, turning once. Will take about 4 minutes per side on a high heat and up to 10 minutes a side on a low heat (which mine were cooked on).
- Check if asparagus is cooked by inserting a skewer.
- Serve hot or cold as a side dish.

Would it be ok to do this on the grill, inside, rather than on the BBQ? Would it still have that delicious chargrilled taste, I wonder? I’m thinking ahead in case the weather behaves badly!
Camilla
If I was doing asparagus indoors then I’d just roast in the oven, less fussy.

Love the skewer tip! I normally chuck mine in a BBQ tray to stop it falling between the bars or wrap two spears with parma ham.
Camilla
Thanks Claire:-)
